DAST-10: Drug Abuse Screening Test
A short clinical screening tool used to identify problematic drug use, excluding alcohol and tobacco, in the past 12 months.
What this screening looks at
DAST-10 looks at patterns of drug use and their consequences: whether use has become hard to control, whether it’s affected work, relationships, or health, and whether others have expressed concern.
Frequency & control
Whether drug use happens more often, or is harder to stop, than intended.
Consequences
Impact on relationships, work, legal standing, or physical health.
Concern from others
Whether family or friends have raised concerns about someone’s drug use.
Next steps
Results help determine whether outpatient counselling or a more intensive care plan, including future residential care, is appropriate.
This is a conversation, not a quiz
Like AUDIT, DAST-10 is most reliable when a trained clinician administers it as part of a real intake conversation — accounting for context a self-scored web quiz can’t capture. At Safeways, this happens during your first outpatient visit.
